Over the past 3 months, I've learnt not only learned about how to properly research and write a report, a summary, I've also learnt about how to work together with a team to conduct a presentation. These skills are especially valuable to me as I had forgotten most of these skills after 2 years of National Service. I understand the value of research, presentation and writing skills as I've had the pleasure of studying a similar module in my previous, institution, Singapore Polytechnic. Over the time I've spent in both of these courses, I've come to realize the importance of such skills not only to my future career, but to my daily life as well.

Basically, the true value of the course lies not in the learning and application of methods of good writing and presentation, but in the unspoken emphasis on the importance of critical thinking skills. Where good report writing skills are needed in order to communicate effectively with employers and collogues in the working world, the ability to discern useful information in the appropriate context still reigns supreme. What good can perfect language and writing structure do to a technical report or email if the information contained within is not up to date or contextually relevant?

This questions apply especially to our daily lives in our digitally-connected world. We are confronted with an immense amount of online data daily, accessible at the tips of our fingertips. More importantly, it is much easier for us to share or even create data online than ever before. With that in mind, it is crucial that we learn how to sort the information we receive based on not only their credibility, but also their context. Only by doing our due diligence and constantly analyzing the data we receive, can we prevent ourselves from falling for disinformation or worse, disseminating these false or inaccurate data to the wider society. Ultimately, when we learn to analyze data and it's background critically, we will be resistant to manipulation by potential bad faith actors and therefore secure our democratic principles and our self-determination as a country.
